Compact/Walk-Through
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) began an initiative to allow nurses residing in certain states to obtain a multi-state license, allowing them to practice in their home state as well as the other participating states in the program. The states that currently participate in this program are as follows:
Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin
Walk-Through states allow for a nurse to obtain a temporary license to work in that state. This process takes between 1-2 days. Obtaining a temporary license is used while the nurse's permanent license is being processed. Walk-Though state licenses are valid up to 6 months, depending on the state that is issuing the license. The following states are approved Walk-Through states:
Arizona, District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota and Vermont
